San Marco dei Cavoti and the Sannio
A village where time slows down, between nature, history and hospitality. City walls, stone alleys and noble residences tell centuries of history; around it, the hills of the Fortore, woods and waterfalls, the flavours of torrone and croccantino, and, just a few kilometres away, Pietrelcina, the land of Padre Pio.
What to see and do

The old town
The four gates, the defensive towers, the stone alleys and the noble residences of the village founded in 1350 by Provençal settlers from Gap.

Palazzo Marchesale and Porta Palazzo
The 17th-century residence of the Cavaniglia-Caracciolo marquises, home to L’Antica Loggia, with the gate that once closed off the town.

Tower Clock Museum
A collection unique in Italy of tower clock mechanisms from the 17th to the 20th century, restored and in working order.

Torrone and croccantino
Since 1891 San Marco dei Cavoti has been the town of torrone (nougat): historic confectioners, the chocolate-coated croccantino and the December Festival.

Fortore waterfalls and woods
Trails through oak and beech woods, hidden waterfalls and small lakes: the nature of the Sannio to explore on foot or by e-bike.

Pietrelcina
The birthplace of Padre Pio: his house, the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli and the alleys of the old village.

Benevento
The Arch of Trajan, the Roman Theatre, the Lombard church of Santa Sofia (UNESCO) and the Strega liqueur.

Traditions and festivals
The Torrone and Croccantino Festival in December, the summer food festivals and the patron saint’s feast of St Mark the Evangelist.
